When we were remodeling our first house, we decided to go all the way in the living room and get rid of one of the biggest eyesores in most homes, the big boxy television. (back in 2003 anyway) Our house was small and there was only one wall that would work to hang our new flat screen TV. Problem was, that when you walked in the front door, we didn’t want the first thing you see to be the side of it. TK came up with a solution by making a narrow screen that added interest to the room and blocked the side view of our new toy.
The rails are made of 1″ square tubing, the cross rods are 5/16″ steel rod spaced at 6″ apart, the woven wood came from an 1/8″ door skin that he had left over from a previous project, and there are threaded feet at the top and bottom to help lock it into place. He cut the door skin into 1 3/4″ strips, powder coated the frame and once put together, we had a stylish, economical solution to our problem.
The photo above and the first one below, are of the screen in it’s original location. The other photos are of it in our current home where we placed the screen to give a bit of separation in our open entrance/ living/dining area’s. The close up photo, which was taken by Morgan Satterfield of The Brick House when she came for a visit, shows the simple design, and the other photos I took on a snowy day in the desert. Even if you are a novice welder, you could try this project yourself, or if not, TK can create one for you in any size. Please contact us with questions.

A few of the projects that TK is currently working on. The bathroom closet is ready for the finish that we talked about in the last post, and the bar stools are headed to a bar in the Arts District of Santa Ana, California. More to come in the future on both projects.

TK’s getting ready to start a new bathroom project. Here is the final color sample the client chose for a vanity and storage wall. They also decided on the routed handle in the first photo below for the bathroom. The wood is red lacquered oak and the grain is filled with a contrasting color. The metal handle in the center below is for a future project. We will post complete photos when this project is complete.

This coffee table is 40″ x 21″ x 15″ tall and is made of recycled Douglas Fir. TK custom made the blackened steel base.
TK made this credenza as a tribute to one of his favorite designers, Paul McCobb. Made of maple euro-ply with one door black lacquered oak and the other white laminate, this piece features 4 drawers for storage and an adjustable shelf on the interior. The base is made of 1/2 steel rod.

We’re trying to get into the habit of photographing TK’s work before it goes out the door, so here are a few recent shots. The client requested an Eames inspired storage unit for his office. They can literally be fabricated in any size. This one is 48″W x 17 1/4″D x 32 3/4″ H While set up to create it, rather than make just one, TK went ahead and made 4. These are made of birch euro-ply, recycled etched plywood and feature aged brass caps and screws. You can contact us for prices and locations.

If you’re in to Modern Design, you probably don’t like clutter. We’ve all been to a friends house, or possibly your own, where there just seems to be “stuff” laying everywhere. So where do you put your Adult Toys? No, No……I mean your remote controls, ipod, cell phone, you know, your gadgets. We make three versions of what we like to call the Adult Toy Box. Each version has the same size box, 20″w x 9″h x 12″d, and all have a aluminum track for the doors to slide from side to side. The difference between them is the base and the door material. In two of them you see one door made of walnut, the other white laminate but one base is like a tripod while the other has a convenient shelf under the box. The third version has keyed mitered joints, both doors made of vintage etch wood and a base that resembles a spider. In the past, builders used etch wood for wall paneling . It’s simply plywood that has been chemically etched. It gives the wood an interesting effect. We salvaged it from a home that was being remodeled and now TK uses it in fabricating various pieces of furniture. Unfortunately, we have a limited supply of this material. Our furniture made with etch wood are one of a kind pieces and will be limited editions. So whether you need a landing spot when you walk in the door, an end table with storage by the couch, or a bed side table, you decide which toys you want in your Toy Box! Contact us for pricing.
